Gifted and Talented Education (GATE)
The GATE Program at Redwood
What is GATE? GATE stands for Gifted and Talented Education.
The purpose of GATE is to provide qualitatively differentiated learning experiences for students with unique abilities and talents in all academic areas and/or visual and performing arts with the expectation that students will be successful learners capable of performing at high levels of ability. Research has shown that specialized instructional strategies, along with opportunities for gifted students to interact with each other on a daily basis, yield higher academic performance, as well as improved social and emotional well-being.
At Redwood, we differentiate curriculum experiences, which include critical thinking, inquiry, problem solving, and creativity. Teachers are able to focus on individual needs by using depth and complexity, pacing, research, and individual learning styles to help guide instruction.
Opportunities for Gifted Students at Redwood
GATE students are encouraged to become involved in school programs: band, orchestra, drama, choir, musical theater, yearbook, ASB, PTSA and Lunch Club Activities.
Reflections is a national arts recognition and achievement program for students to unleash their creative talents and be inspired. Students explore arts and culture, develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and recognize themselves as artists.
Odyssey of the Mind
Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Kids work as a team to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics and bring their solutions to competition on the local, state, and World level. Thousands of teams from throughout the U.S. and from about 25 other countries participate in the program. Contact Ms. Paola Vargas for more information at Redwood
