Next Generation Science Standards
Sequoia is up-to-date with the NGSS. We are implementing this approach to learning through asking questions, making investigations, solving problems, thinking critically, and developing elaborate scientific conclusions. An Overview
Our 6th graders begin to explore earth science, digging into topics like earthquakes and volcanoes while finishing their year with ecology and environmental awareness. Our 7th graders transition to life science, exploring microscopic life, participating in some hands-on dissections and finishing their year with the “Family Life” unit. The 8th graders finish their scientific journey focused on physical science. The class is devoted to teaching the basics in physics and chemistry. The year begins with units covering Newton’s Laws of Motion and gravity. By the end of the year, they learn about the atom, the periodic table, chemical reactions, and chemical bonding. At each grade level, students participate in a wide range of labs that help them see the real-world applications that science provides. Most classes are CP (college prep) designated, except for Honors Physical Science in 8th grade. The 8th grade Honors class is for students who have a high interest in science as a career and want to be advanced in science. The Honors program is taught at a 9th grade Physical Science level and students who maintain an “A” OR “B” will advance to Honors in 9th grade in high school. There are no Honors science classes at the 6th or 7th grade level.
Lab/Hands-On Program
All students have the opportunity to participate in science labs on a frequent basis. We have received grants from Amgen and other businesses to purchase equipment and fund our lab programs. Parents can also make donations at the beginning of each school year to provide funds for consumable items needed, such as food coloring, vinegar, baking soda, salt, toothpicks, marshmallows, gumdrops, push pins, and pipe-cleaners. We invite you to come visit us in the lab -- just call the main office to leave a message for your child's teacher (805-498-3617).
