• 50 years

Established on July 1, 1974, this school year, the Conejo Valley Unified School District celebrates 50 years of providing exceptional educational experiences to all students! From a vast ranch land to one of the most distinguished and awarded districts in California, we cherish the nurturing, innovative, and premier learning community we have built over the past five decades.

Throughout our history, we have taken pride in the pivotal role our school district plays in equipping the children of this community with the tools, resources and knowledge necessary to achieve the future of their dreams.

As we look forward to the next 50 years of service, it’s only fitting that we reflect on the history of our district and its origins that are our foundation. Thank you to our incredible teachers, administrators, staff members, students, families and volunteers for being an intrinsic part of our what makes the CVUSD the special place it is to learn and grow!

Happy Birthday, CVUSD!

Home of the first Elementary School in the Conejo Valley

  • Conejo Elementary School was the first elementary school in the Conejo Valley. In 1872, John Edwards, who lived in Santa Barbara, met Howard Mills. They purchased land in the Conejo Valley. At the time, no schools existed in the Conejo Valley. Any children, including Howard Mills’ own daughter, would have to live in Santa Barbara for a proper education. Mills, as a result, created a private school in his home called “Triunfo.”

As more and more parents wanted their children to attend his institution, a public “Conejo School” was built– nearly 100 years before the creation of the Conejo Valley Unified School District.  In 1877, all the children were counted and 54 were enrolled to start the first school. It was named Conejo School. The original site was located on what is now the corner of Westlake Boulevard and Townsgate Drive.

In 1924, Conejo Elementary School moved to the current site of CVUSD’s Conejo Academy of Leadership and Language Immersion on Conejo School Road. That building was demolished in 1957, as it did not meet earthquake safety code requirements. The new school building opened the following year, where it continues to serve children in grades TK-5.
