All Walnut students, unless their parents choose to opt out, are screened in 3rd grade to see if they are eligible for Gifted and Talented Education (GATE).  Walnut teachers are skilled at differentiating classroom instruction to make sure they meet the educational needs of all children, including students who need additional challenge.  Mrs. Sarah Feiereisen is our teacher GATE facilitator, who provides additional training for teachers as well as monthly GATE activities for students in a "Lunch Bunch" format.  Mrs. Stefanie Caswell designs GATE activities and parent education opportunities at the district level.  She sends information directly to the families of identified GATE students.  At Walnut, our current GATE District Advisory Council parent representative is Mrs. Lucia Lang.
