An Important Message from CVUSD Leadership
Dear CVUSD Community:
During these last few months, and especially the last few weeks, there has been on-going social media warfare and print disinformation campaigns against the Conejo Valley Unified School District, our schools, our employees and our students. This has taken place across many platforms, with videos, printed flyers and more. This type of behavior is harmful, perpetuates false information, and does absolutely nothing to help us best serve all students in the CVUSD. Even more so, with events from the last five days, this campaign to harm public education in our community has crossed a new line of danger with explicit threats of violence to CVUSD leadership.
In the late afternoon of Thursday, October 13th, the office of CVUSD’s Superintendent, Dr. Mark McLaughlin, received two voice messages from the same individual. One of the voice messages contained a specific death threat to the Superintendent and the second message was directed to the District’s Board of Education and District leadership – no specific names mentioned.
When the messages were first heard by District staff on the morning of Friday, October 14th, law enforcement was called to the District Office. An investigation was immediately started, through which it was determined that the threats were credible. On the night of Saturday, October 15th, the individual who left the voice messages was brought into law enforcement custody. We are so grateful to the entire Thousand Oaks Police Department, the City of Thousand Oaks, and all other governmental agencies, including the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, Santa Barbara Sheriff's Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation, that participated and helped in the investigation.
It is important to note there was never a threat made against any of our CVUSD schools or students. If there had been any threats to school, students, or school site staff, the situation would have been handled in cooperation with law enforcement and in adherence with our school and district safety protocols. Due to the fact that there was an open, active investigation into the death threats received, we were previously unable to communicate any information about the matter, as it was imperative to not interfere with law enforcement’s ability to locate and arrest this individual.
We are once again extremely thankful to law enforcement - who today released this Nixle about the arrest.
Nothing can ever rationalize an explicit threat or act of violence.
Our District’s and schools’ top priority is our students. That is what we dedicate our days and time for: OUR STUDENTS.
There are more than 16,500 students who come to our campuses to prepare themselves for the future of their dreams. We support them in caring learning environments with rigorous academics and extracurricular activities.
Anything printed or stated elsewhere, conspiracy, theory, or whatever, is just another attempt to harm and disparage public education in our community.
There are individuals who spend time and much effort to disparage the CVUSD on social media and create false narratives from email snippets, social media posts, half statements made at Board meetings, and printed disinformation. They seek to divide our community and seem to be willing to use any tactic to achieve this aim.
For example, what was once lively discourse at our Board of Education meetings during public comments and agendized topics has escalated to a concerted and organized effort to create chaos and further narratives that are unfounded and simply have nothing to do with current action items nor Board duties and business. To get a true picture of the District and our important work, watch the action items being approved to help support all of our students, review the consent agenda items that are brought forward for our schools to successfully function, and listen to the information items being presented by staff.
The sensationalizing of rumors and months-old reported incidents must stop. These fictitious narratives are being wrongly used to politicize incidents involving our students. When we talk about circumstances involving students, we are talking about children. Real children who attend our schools, who play with friends on our playgrounds, and who have families living in our community. The spread of false information must stop.
Public education is a cornerstone of our community and this nation. There is a place for all who would like to be involved and actively work to continue to move CVUSD Forward in a positive way.
The CVUSD and its team of educational leaders will always stand by our students, all of them.

Estimada comunidad de CVUSD:
Durante estos últimos meses, y especialmente las últimas semanas, ha habido una guerra continua en las redes sociales y campañas de desinformación impresa contra el Distrito Escolar Unificado de Conejo Valley, nuestras escuelas, nuestros empleados y nuestros estudiantes. Esto se ha llevado a cabo en muchas plataformas, con videos, volantes impresos y más. Este tipo de comportamiento es dañino, perpetúa información falsa y no hace absolutamente nada para ayudarnos a servir mejor a todos los estudiantes en CVUSD. Más aún, con los eventos de los últimos cinco días, esta campaña para dañar la educación pública en nuestra comunidad ha cruzado una nueva línea de peligro con amenazas explícitas de violencia al equipo de liderazgo de CVUSD.
A última hora de la tarde del jueves 13 de octubre, la oficina del Superintendente de CVUSD, Dr. Mark McLaughlin, recibió dos mensajes de teléfono de la misma persona. Uno de los mensajes contenía una amenaza de muerte específica hacia el Superintendente y el segundo mensaje estaba dirigido a la Junta de Educación del Distrito y al equipo de liderazgo del Distrito; no se mencionaron nombres específicos. Cuando los mensajes fueron escuchados por primera vez por el personal del Distrito en la mañana del viernes 14 de octubre, se llamó a la policía a la Oficina del Distrito. Inmediatamente se inició una investigación, a través de la cual se determinó que las amenazas eran creíbles. En la noche del sábado 15 de octubre, la persona que dejó los mensajes telefónicos fue puesta bajo custodia policial. Estamos muy agradecidos con todo el Departamento de Policía de Thousand Oaks, la Ciudad de Thousand Oaks y todas las demás agencias gubernamentales, incluido el Departamento del Sheriff del Condado de Ventura, el Departamento del Sheriff de Santa Bárbara y la Oficina Federal de Investigaciones, que participaron y ayudaron en la investigación.
Es importante tener en cuenta que nunca hubo una amenaza contra ninguna de nuestras escuelas o estudiantes de CVUSD. Cualquier cosa impresa o declarada en otro lugar, conspiración, teoría o lo que sea, es solo otro intento de dañar y menospreciar la educación pública en nuestra comunidad.
Hay personas que dedican tiempo y mucho esfuerzo a menospreciar a CVUSD en las redes sociales y crean narrativas falsas usando partes pequeñas de un fragmento de correo electrónico, publicaciones en las redes sociales, declaraciones a mitad realizadas en las reuniones de la Junta y desinformación impresa. Buscan dividir a nuestra comunidad y parecen estar dispuestos a usar cualquier táctica para lograr este objetivo.
Por ejemplo, lo que alguna vez fue un diálogo dinámico en nuestras reuniones de la Junta de Educación durante los comentarios públicos y los temas programados, se ha convertido en un esfuerzo concertado y organizado para crear caos y más narrativas que no tienen fundamento y simplemente no tienen nada que ver con los elementos de acción actuales ni con los deberes y trabajo de la Junta. Para obtener una imagen real del Distrito y nuestro importante trabajo, observe los elementos de acción que se aprueban para ayudar a apoyar a todos nuestros estudiantes, revise los elementos de la agenda de consentimiento que se presentan para que nuestras escuelas funcionen con éxito y escuche los elementos de información que se están presentado por el personal.
El sensacionalismo de rumores e incidentes reportados hace meses debe cesar. Estas narrativas ficticias se están utilizando incorrectamente para politizar incidentes que involucran a nuestros estudiantes. Cuando hablamos de circunstancias que involucran a los estudiantes, estamos hablando de niños. Niños reales que asisten a nuestras escuelas, que juegan con amigos en nuestros parques infantiles y que tienen familias viviendo en nuestra comunidad. La difusión de información falsa debe parar.
La educación pública es el pilar de nuestra comunidad y de esta nación. Hay un lugar para todos los que deseen participar y trabajar activamente para seguir haciendo avanzar a CVUSD de manera positiva.
El CVUSD y su equipo de líderes educativos siempre apoyarán a nuestros estudiantes, a todos ellos.
